Simply Schedule

Simply Schedule is an Android app for planning and tracking projects, built to break big goals down into manageable pieces. You can set up projects made of individual tasks and task groups, then add things like start and target dates, estimated costs, and effort to each one—giving you a clear timeline and baseline to work from.

As you go, the app keeps a running total on everything, comparing your original estimates against what’s actually happening—dates, spending, hours worked, all of it. That way you can spot delays or budget issues early and adjust your plan instead of getting blindsided.

It’s meant to help you run your projects, not box you in—you can update schedules, estimates, and totals whenever you need to. The numbers are there to inform you, not dictate what you do next.

There’s also a block diagram that shows your whole project and how the tasks connect, with progress summaries at every level so you can see how things are going at a glance.

Creating a New Project

Project creation is the first step – to getting started, but don’t feel that you need to provide all the possible information at the start. The project header information can be updated at any point. This is true for all project elements. The design is not meant to constrain you but rather to act as a friendly place where you can document your project’s structure, record costs and schedules to help make you project proceed with as little friction as possible.

Basic project information is displayed first but pressing the ‘More’ drop-down reveals the remainder of the project data that you might want to record.

The structure of your project is portrayed in two ways – as an indented list (down to t2 levels) and as a structure diagram with boxes and lines (using the icons at the top of the page).

Creating a Task Group

Task Groups are the mechanism used by Simply Schedule to control the relationship between tasks. A Task Group’s serial/parallel setting defines how task within the group relate to each other – either as a list where each task must be completed before the next begins or where all tasks within the group may proceed in parallel. In either case the tasks group is not considered complete until all tasks within the group have bee completed.

Creating Tasks

Tasks are the basic unit of work in a project. Tasks can be put together into task groups. Tasks in a group can be set to be executed in series or in parallel. In series the duration of the tasks are added together to calculate the total effort and duration of the group. In parallel then the duration of the group is that of the largest task in the group. If part of a project is going to be executed partly in series and partly in parallel then simply break it down into further sub components. There is no reasonable constraint on the level of nesting.

Monitoring Progress

Click on the project tile to show an overview of the project – it’s tasks and task groups. Notice in the header there are a number of icons:

  • A list icon which will show an indented list of all the task groups and tasks in the project. Click on a task group to reveal its detail or a task to reveal the details of the task. A pencil icon in the header takes you to the task edit form.
  • A structure diagram icon which displays the project as boxes and joining lines.
  • A share icon to let you create a snapshot of the entire project for sharing or as a backup.
